Contentious Trusts and Succession
The work of the CTSG team
The Contentious Trust and Succession Group (CTSG) undertakes a wide variety of work. The clients range from small charities to high net worth individuals. Much of the work involves disputes about wills and the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 which allows certain people connected with the deceased to challenge the provisions of a will. Usually at the other end of the financial scale are the large international settlements which, for any number of reasons, though often due to family arguments, can be subject to intense dispute. The work will, for example, involve co-ordinating hearings in multiple jurisdictions, liaising with foreign lawyers and ensuring foreign judgments are enforced in the UK. The group also works closely with a number of other departments within the firm such as Family, Property, and Probate.

My experience within the CTSG team
CTSG trainees experience the wide variety of work carried out by the group from an early stage. This includes researching points of law, liaising with lawyers and clients and drafting instructions to counsel. There is considerable opportunity for client contact and I assumed responsibility for several files where I was the main point of contact for the clients. On one file, I travelled to Plymouth and Llandudno to interview witnesses and prepare witness statements.
I worked closely with counsel to advise clients and participated in negotiations with opponents to reach a favourable outcome. Trainees are encouraged to attend Business Development events and meet other solicitors and barristers. The team is friendly and it is easy to get to know everybody.
