The work of the Corporate team
Withers Corporate team provides corporate, commercial, banking and financial services advice to both UK and international clients. The range of work undertaken by the department makes this a varied, interesting and challenging seat for trainees. Clients range from large international companies, to entrepreneurs setting up new businesses, international banks to family owned investment companies. The team has a large number of Italian clients and lots of clients involved in the fashion industry. The team in London works closely with the New York, Geneva, Milan and Hong Kong offices so the work is truly international in nature. As a trainee you are involved in all aspects of the department’s work, which means that you leave the department with experience across a whole range of corporate and commercial areas.

My experience in the Corporate team
During my time in Corporate, I mainly worked on a very large deal involving the partial takeover of a large gold mining company in Kazakhstan, which spanned many months and allowed me to work closely with a large team of assistant solicitors and Partners. I was made to feel like an integral part of the team, and was therefore given a lot of responsibility in relation to specific aspects of the deal.
The work in Corporate is varied, and Trainees can expect to attend client meetings, draft commercial contracts and board minutes, undertake verification exercises and liaise closely with lawyers representing the other side of a deal. Corporate is generally a fast-paced department, though there is a good support network for when the pressure is on.
