The work of FITT

The Funds, Investments, Tax and Trusts (FITT) team was set up a couple of years ago to cater to clients’ needs in corporate and private client matters. There is an obvious overlap between working for individuals and the companies associated with them, especially with clients from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) who do not necessarily differentiate between their personal and business affairs. Withers, and the FITT group in particular, is increasingly keen to tap into that market alongside the mainstream commercial, insolvency, funds and banking advice that we provide.

The client base of the FITT team ranges from both UK and international wealthy individuals and corporates, to funds, sports clubs and financial institutions.

My experience within the FITT team

My time in FITT was a real mix of corporate, tax and wealth planning work. On the corporate side, I was asked to draft the documents necessary for the sale of a company. On the other side of the spectrum, I drafted a lasting power of attorney and a ‘Living Will' for a client. It was interesting having to think about the complex moral and ethical decisions involved and how these can translate into a practical working legal document. On the tax side, I helped calculate historic tax due over ten years. This entailed some great detective-type work investigating old funds and trying to piece together an overview, tracing the journey of cash and assets over the preceding ten years through various bank accounts and investment funds.
