Real Estate (Residential)
The work of the Residential Real Estate team
The Residential department deals with a wide range of real estate matters. The largest part of this is transactional work, i.e. the sale and purchase of houses, flats and other properties. In addition, the team will deal with the property aspects of matters being dealt with elsewhere in the firm, e.g. matrimonial transfers following a divorce settlement, providing advice to the wealth planning department, or probate sales. Clients tend to be high net worth individuals, but also include companies, trustees and executors.

My experience within the Residential Real Estate team
As a trainee you get a great deal of responsibility, and will handle several matters from start to finish during the course of your seat. In particular, you will handle the sale of freehold and leasehold properties, beginning with the preparation of the sales pack and answering pre-contract enquiries, followed by exchanging contracts and, ultimately, completion. The work is practical and encourages you to think for yourself, although you can always call on your supervisor or others within the department for help should you ever need it.
You will also carry out smaller, more discreet jobs for fee earners around the firm. For example, you may need to register the transfer of a property following the death of one of the joint tenants, or apply for a home rights notice for a client who is getting divorced, or draft a declaration of trust for a client who wishes to transfer a share in his property to his wife.
