Tips and advice
Bryan Galat joined the Firm in 2000 as a summer associate, returning as a first year associate in 2001, Bryan heads up the recruitment team with assistance from Beverly Annello, HR Manager. Here Bryan talks about what he looks for in a candidate whilst on campus.
My tips on what we look for
We only have twenty minutes with candidates on campus and we therefore need to be quite focused on looking for the skills we need within the team. That said, we can’t assess every skill required in only twenty minutes.
Communication skills
On campus we’re largely looking at the individual’s communication skills – are they comfortable talking?, would they be at ease with my client base?, do they sound as if they have the intellect to provide solutions?, are they able to persuade us in a nice manner that they are a good candidate?
Self promotion
How well an individual can sell themselves is quite a good indication as to how well they will be able to work with their peers and supervisors, and ultimately how they might be able to interact with clients.
Intellect and technical ability
Once back in the office our interviews will focus primarily on whether the individual has the intellect and potential technical ability to be a high quality lawyer and whether the individual’s personal goals look to be a good fit with the firm.
Team players
We have a strong team work ethic and therefore we also need to be sure that we recruit those who can work effectively within a team framework.
